This is a beautifully designed traditional kitchen in New York City and a perfect example of how a traditional American kitchen can be put together in a very elegant and highly functional way in a small space such as that found in Manhattan. Designed by Urban Homes and featuring custom cabinetry from Wood-Mode (one of the leading manufacturers of luxury custom cabinetry in America), the kitchen is a very well presented example of a traditional kitchen with a modern twist. It’s a very refined kitchen with traditional architectural detailing, modern conveniences, high quality materials and superb craftsmanship.
A Timeless Traditional Kitchen with a Contemporary Touch
The design is all about beautifully proportioned light grey painted Wood-Mode cabinetry with classic recessed panel doors. The cabinetry colour is very subtle and creates a really soft, sophisticated feel which works perfectly with the bright white countertops and backsplash.
Warm brass cabinet hardware provides a lovely contrast to the cool grey cabinetry and adds a real touch of character and a certain amount of understated luxury. The kitchen has the traditional design elements but is kept in balance with clean lines, modern appliances and a good deal of clever storage. It’s a kitchen that is very much of its time but not in any way a stuffy, old-fashioned kitchen.

Custom Wood-Mode Cabinetry Designed for NYC Living
In Manhattan apartments every square inch counts. This kitchen is a perfect example of how custom Wood-Mode cabinetry can be used to get the most out of a space in terms of storage and utility without compromising on the look.
Full height cabinetry runs right up to the ceiling, making good use of the head height and giving a real sense of completeness to the room.
Tall cabinets provide lots of useful hidden storage, the base cabinets and drawers are well arranged so that all the normal kitchen items are kept in an organised and easily accessible manner.
The classic recessed panel cabinet doors, the co-ordinated decorative mouldings and the carefully chosen brass pulls are all indicative of the attention to detail that is the hallmark of Wood-Mode’s custom cabinetry.
By blending traditional cabinet construction with a very practical layout they’ve produced a kitchen which is both attractive and one that is designed for the real world.
Elegant Materials and Finishes
The materials were selected to achieve a bright, welcoming kitchen with a sophisticated traditional feel. Light grey cabinetry: the soft painted finish gives the kitchen a very classic look and provides a nice degree of contrast against the white. White countertops and a white backsplash. The white will reflect both natural and artificial light and is intended to help make the narrow kitchen feel a lot bigger. Brass hardware: warm brass knobs and pulls to match the cabinetry and add a touch of sophisticated decoration.
Herringbone wood flooring: the light herringbone floor provides a warm, textured feel and a very classic European design touch. Stainless steel appliances (professional style cooking appliances and a contemporary faucet) complete the picture, providing a modern counterpoint to the traditional cabinetry. Together these materials create a most pleasing balance of traditional elegance and modern functionality.
